Life Cycle Assessment Framework: Incorporating an extended environmental perspective in the Haldex Project Management Model

Background: An increased concern of environmental issues have made companies, including Haldex, look for new engineering and design practices to keep up with legislations and stakeholder pressure, often by analyzing products’ total environmental impact over their life cycles, in so called life cycle assessment studies. The Haldex Project Management Model is a company specific project model where Haldex projects move through, till their completion, and the concern is that life cycle assessment studies have not been included as a deliverable in the Haldex Project Management Model before. iv Purpose: The purpose of this Master’s Thesis is to develop and present Haldex with a life cycle analysis tool and a framework for environmental impact assessments of new products or changes to existing products, providing evaluation of projects in the Haldex Project Management Model. Methodology: In this thesis a mainly qualitative research style was used in order to provide the specific life cycle assessment framework, as the work required an exploratory procedure, studying behavior and practices from the inside. Data gathering was conducted using several methods such as interviews, observations, content analysis and an extensive literature review. The framework was developed gradually by analyzing and screening various tools. Results & Presenting Haldex with a suitable life Conclusion: cycle assessment framework, including assessment tools that are applicable in the Haldex Project Management Model and a product’s R&D stages, has been achieved through a preliminary study and analysis. By conducting a preliminary study and examining environmental processes and areas both internal and external to Haldex, a number of criteria for life cycle assessment tools at the company could be set. A screening and analysis of bestpractice tools then helped to identify suitable tools for Haldex to begin working with, which are presented in the Haldex Life Cycle Assessment Development Framework, which allows environmental v assessment progress over time. This includes a semi-quantitative Design for Environment-matrix and accompanied guide, as well as a quantitative carbon footprint analysis where a prototype, accomplished through the spreadsheet software Excel, may be used to start working with the latter tool

Designing for Engagement in TEL – a Teacher-Researcher Collaboration

    Get PDF
Student engagement is significantly related to both retention and learning outcomes. Hence, teachers need to consider how their practices affect student engagement. Applying design-based research (DBR), the purpose of this study was to approach influencers of student engagement and explore how teachers and researchers collaboratively could develop learning activities with learning technologies (LTs) to facilitate this. The intervention included an online assessment application, a virtual learning environment (VLE) and an additional tablet for the teacher. The teacher constantly carried the tablet around and used it to access the students’ shared workspace. The intervention was implemented in two classes in an upper secondary school. The study focuses on teachers’ experience and instruction. Three observations of the implementation of learning design and intervention evaluations were analysed. The results indicate that the teachers and researchers could design learning activities that facilitate student engagement. Engagement was facilitated as hindrances to engagement were identified and approached. The suggested solutions shaped the design of the learning activity and included LTs which provided insights into the students’ learning processes and thereby increased the teacher’s ability to scaffold learning and provide timely feedback. The LTs used opened up for additional ways for students to engage with the content, peers and contributions which motivated students to direct their energy toward task. When conditions for learning changed as a result of implementing LTs, both student interaction and teacher practices were affected. However, it was not observed that the teacher would sustain the design without support. This emphasises the need for educational goals and visions to be consistent and communicated to practitioners; otherwise, teachers will not have the guidance needed to advance or evaluate their professional development

Practicing interaction between politics and administration can be a good idea after elections. One way to do this is to discuss cases together. Based on research on governance and control of the public sector and the advantages of case pedagogy, the authors discuss what can facilitate or hinder the realization of political decision

Genital Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease in Females: A Cross-Sectional Study

AbstractUsing the National Institutes of Health (NIH) consensus criteria for chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), we assessed the prevalence, symptoms, and clinical signs of female genital cGVHD in a cross-sectional population-based study. Forty-two women were evaluated at a median of 80 months (range, 13 to 148 months) after undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Medical history, ongoing medications, and genital signs and symptoms were recorded. Gynecologic examination for the diagnosis and clinical scoring of genital cGVHD was combined with clinical scoring of extragenital cGVHD for the estimation of each patient's global cGVHD score. Biopsy specimens from the genital mucosa were obtained from 38 patients. Genital cGVHD was diagnosed in 22 of 42 patients (52%). Its presence was associated with systemic corticoid steroid treatment of extragenital cGVHD (P = .001), older age (P = .07), and HSCT from a sibling donor (P = .002). Five patients had isolated genital cGVHD. Dryness, pain, smarting pain (P < .05 for all), and dyspareunia (P = .001) were observed more frequently in the women with genital cGVHD. Twelve patients had advanced genital cGVHD (clinical score 3), which was the main factor explaining the high rate (15 of 42) of severe global cGVHD. The rate of genital cGVHD was similar (P = .37) in patients with a follow-up of ≥80 months (10 of 22) and those with a follow-up of <80 months (12 of 20). We found no convincing relationship between clinical diagnosis and histopathological assessment of mucosal biopsy specimens. In our group of women with a long follow-up after HSCT, genital cGVHD was common and in many cases incorrectly diagnosed. Genital cGVHD causes genital symptoms and affects sexual life, and may present without any other cGVHD, warranting early and continuous gynecologic surveillance in all women after HSCT
